Debt Free India Movement

Debt Free India Movement by SingleDebt

Post-pandemic India witnessed a debt crisis. India’s household debt surged to 39.1% of GDP. The middle class accumulated a ~ $245 Billion burden of outstanding personal loans (2024).

Financial instability & mental health deterioration was palpable:

30%Credit Card Default Rates spiked
11.2%MSME NPA Ratios
40%Couples reported financial stress & arguments, the top predictor of divorce
75%Indians experienced financial stress, insomnia or restless sleep

Despite the severity, ‘Debt’ remained a taboo topic. Societal stigma prevents people from speaking out. Borrowers were suffering in silence – facing brutal harassment from recovery agents, legal threats, & severe mental health decline – believing they were alone.

Indian middle class in metros, Tier 1, and Tier 2 cities, including MSMEs – fueling the economy. Our movement targeted borrowers struggling with outstanding personal loans reaching approximately $245 billion in 2024 and MSMEs affected by the increasing MSME NPA ratio at 11.2%.

Middle class Indians affected by debt stress

Goal:

To drive awareness and adoption of debt management – a new-to-India category, transforming a fintech product/ service into a national mission to build a stronger, more stable, and aware middle class – backbone of the Indian economy.

Approach:

We wanted to break the paralyzing ‘Debt Silence’ – that prevents the middle class from seeking help making SingleDebt (India’s 1st & only debt management solution), the first port of call aimed to empower individuals with the safety to express & foster a nation grounded in financial & legal literacy.

Not just as a service, but as the leader of a new-to-India category: Debt Management

We moved beyond the traditional approach of transactional advertising. We engineered a cultural awakening, a national movement.

Destigmatize Debt:

Create a safe, empathetic environment where ‘financial stress’ could be discussed openly, shifting the narrative from ‘shame’ to ‘solution’.

Establish Category Leadership:

SingleDebt as the only ethical & legal solution for millions caught in the debt trap. Converting passive awareness into active adoption by replacing fear-based messaging.

Combat Illiteracy:

Address India’s financial literacy gap with only 27% meeting basic financial literacy standards.

We launched a national awakening – ‘The Debt Free India Movement’, reaching India’s middle class & MSMEs on platforms they are present. Creating a ‘Phygital’ ecosystem to bridge the gap between digital awareness & on-ground relief.

One Song. One Movement.

The conversation went mainstream with the DFI web destination, DFI petition as a clarion call & the emotionally resonant DFI (Karz Mukt Bharat) Song to make a harsh reality easy to talk about & Spread.
